How Reiki Works: Channeling Healing Energy from Source

The practice works through the transmission of energy from Source through the practitioner’s hands for healing. You may liken it to the practice of these amazing martial artists who can smash bricks and break apart huge logs of wood. They do so by harnessing chi, or energy, and then using it for force or self-defense. Reiki is kind of like that, except as trained practitioners, we are tuning into the highest form of healing energy. We then harness that vibration into our own bodies to channel it and share it with others or ourselves. The practitioner is essentially a conduit or straw for the energy to transmit through.

Another easy way to think about it is by imagining charging a device. In this case, the practitioner becomes the conduit (wire), connecting directly with the energy source (outlet) to recharge the person, animal, or place (device). Although some people are better channels than others,

Mikao Usui is quoted as believing that “Reiki can never and will never belong to just one person or one organization. Reiki is the spiritual heritage of all humanity.”

In this way, Reiki really is one of the most natural ways a person can bring healing energy to themselves, others, and the world around them.

Frequently Asked Questions

Reiki is suitable for everyone, and it’s considered “low-risk” as there are no known contraindications. It’s best used as a daily self-care practice to help maintain the health of one’s own energy field. Although many practitioners lay their hands directly on the receiver’s body, it is not necessary. In fact, as one progresses in their practice of Reiki, they will learn to send Reiki healing remotely, which does not require the practitioner to be in the same time zone as the receiver. Today, Reiki is being utilized in many healthcare settings and is especially prevalent in Oncology, Perioperative care, Hospice, Pain Management, and Mental Health.

The mechanism of action for Reiki is not fully understood. As technology advances and we better understand how our bodies store and process subtle energy, we may gain deeper insights into the potential of energy medicine modalities. It’s believed that Reiki helps to activate the parasympathetic nervous system, often referred to as “rest and digest,” which allows the body to naturally heal itself.

This exchange of energy often results in a feeling of peace and relaxation. Reiki may help alleviate symptoms of any dis-ease or illness by restoring a sense of balance and safety in the body. This sensation can lead to a decrease in the perception of pain, anxiety, and depression, while calming the nervous system enough to promote restful sleep. In fact, many people fall asleep during a full table treatment. Some research on Reiki suggests it can also re-energize a person, helping to counter chronic fatigue, particularly in cancer patients.

Reiki treatments are always personal. Sometimes, I joke that receiving a Reiki treatment feels like you just ran a marathon and your body is pulsing with strong energy, while at the same time, it feels like you just took a Xanax and you’re ready for bed. It’s kind of amazing that way.

Every single treatment will feel different because of various factors, such as:

  • The practitioner’s skill (how effective they are as a channel)
  • The recipient’s own energy body, which is always in flux and influenced by mental, emotional, spiritual, and physical health.

The energy systems (aura, meridians, chakras) are as sensitive as any other bodily systems. Just like when you eat something questionable and your digestive system gets thrown off, one of your major energy centers could also become unbalanced. Reiki realigns everything and restores energetic homeostasis. The intention is that the physical body and other aspects of your health will follow suit and improve.

For the most part, Reiki treatments feel relaxing, with many people reporting sensory experiences such as warmth, tingling, electrical pulses, colors, visions, peace, mental quiet, internal wisdom, and a restored connection to oneself and Source energy.

All treatments are completely different!

For remote sessions:
If the session is remote, we will communicate beforehand to schedule a time. You can choose to have the session live via Zoom, FaceTime, or phone call. Remote sessions can also be scheduled for specific times (e.g., before a surgery) without needing to communicate on the day of the session.

For in-person sessions:
You will book a time and date, and I will provide the location of our healing space. You’ll lie down on a Reiki table, similar to a massage bed, but you will remain fully clothed. It is recommended to wear comfortable clothing for the most relaxing experience.

During the treatment, you may drift off to sleep or enter a dream-like state, which is completely normal. I may incorporate sound healing, crystals, incense, herbs for clearing, magnets, or stones. Depending on your comfort level, I may lightly hover or touch your head, hands, and feet. However, physical touch is not necessary for Reiki to be effective.

This is completely personal to each individual. It’s similar to talk therapy—some people benefit from daily sessions, while others might only need one session for closure. Personally, I believe incorporating some form of Reiki every day is beneficial for maintaining energetic hygiene and awareness of your own energy field.

However, Reiki may not be suitable in the following situations:

  • In an emergency or life-threatening situation (e.g., heart attack, stroke, seizure). In such cases, immediate medical attention is required. Reiki can be integrated into the person’s care plan once they are in a stable state.
  • During an acute psychotic episode or delusion, where the person may not fully understand the energy exchange, potentially causing distress or confusion. Once they are grounded and safe, Reiki can be supportive in their healing process.

Yes! Reiki is for everyone!
Every living being has their own unique life-force energy, and Reiki helps bring harmony to everything and everyone. Children and pets are often very receptive to Reiki’s calming and balancing effects.

This is a great question. Since Reiki isn’t regulated by a central governing body, it’s somewhat unstandardized. The best approach is to get a recommendation from someone you trust. If you’re looking for a practitioner, I’d be honored to be that trusted source!
